How to use

  1. Add JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF images.
  2. Leave the output on AVIF, or pick another format if you need it.
  3. Set quality, or switch to Target Size for a maximum file size.
  4. Convert and download the results individually or as a ZIP.

Key benefits

  • Modern format

AVIF can provide strong compression efficiency, depending on the image and encoding settings.

  • Transparency support

Transparent PNGs and WebP files can keep their alpha when you encode to AVIF.

  • Private conversion

Encoding and decoding run in your browser. Images are not uploaded.

What AVIF is

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It is designed for efficient still-image compression and can store photographs as well as graphics with transparency.

Whether an AVIF file is smaller than a WebP or JPG of the same picture depends on the content, the quality setting, and the encoder. There is no fixed percentage.

Browser support

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari can display AVIF in many cases. This converter also uses a WebAssembly encoder and decoder so conversion can still run when native AVIF handling is limited.

If your browser cannot process AVIF safely, the converter shows a clear message instead of failing silently.

Quality and target size

Quality mode uses the same 10–100 control as the other formats. The encoder maps that value to AVIF's own quality scale.

Target Size mode measures the real AVIF file after each attempt and keeps the highest practical quality that fits under your limit, including presets such as 100 KB.

FAQ

Common questions

What is AVIF?

AVIF is a still-image format based on the AV1 codec. It can compress photographs and graphics, and it can store transparency.

Is AVIF smaller than WebP?

It can be, but not always. File size depends on the image content, encoding settings, and the specific encoder. Compare both formats when size matters.

Is AVIF supported by modern browsers?

Many current browsers can display AVIF. Support still varies by version and platform. This tool converts the file locally so you can download AVIF even when you are preparing images for another site.

Can I convert JPG to AVIF?

Yes. Choose JPG or JPEG images and leave the output on AVIF, or open the dedicated JPG to AVIF page.

Can I compress AVIF to 100KB?

Yes. Use Target Size mode or the 100 KB compressor. The result is measured from the real file. Some detailed images still cannot fit under a strict limit.

Is AVIF conversion private?

Yes. Encoding and decoding happen in your browser. The image is not sent to an ATSoftTech server.
